Five Mobile Apps for Stock Photographers

When you’re shooting on the go, sometimes its just not convenient or practical to carry a laptop with you, it’s more than likely that you’ll have a mobile phone in your pocket which will be capable  (in the majority of cases) of doing the same job. There are a whole host of apps on the market that you can download to aid in your planning, editing and even the uploading of your images so I’ve put together a list of five apps which may be of use to the stock photographer.

1. Pocket Light Meter

Available on
Price: iOS Free

If you still shoot film or regularly use manual mode it can be useful to check an exposure before you get your camera out of your bag. Having an app that does this will also save you from carrying extra gear or forking out for an expensive light meter if you’re trying to travel light.

With this app you can set your ISO and then your aperture or shutter speed and the other value will change accordingly to make sure you get the correct exposure. An additional feature is that you can log the exposure settings within the app if you are out scouting locations, so you will have ball park exposure figures to work from on the day.

2. Suncalc.net

Available on
Price: Free

Lighting is a key element in the creation of images to us as photographers and if you shoot landscapes no doubt you’ve heard of the ‘magic’ or ‘golden hours’ as the best times of day for photographs. This is the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset where the low sun produces more defused light.

This app allows you to search for a specific location and date for when you plan to do your shoot in order to work out the best time to head out to make the most of the golden hour.

3. Adobe Lightroom CC

Available on &
Price: Free (Adobe ID required)

Adobe Lightroom is one of the few applications that have become industry standard when it comes to photo editing and in the Lightroom mobile app you can do a quick edit of your images on the go. The best thing about this app though, is that the images you’ve worked on will then be available across all devices you have Lightroom installed on should you wish to pick up your editing or add that little extra touch when you get home.

4. Easy Release – Model Release App

Available on &
Price: £7.99 / $9.99

If you’re planning on selling your images commercially then you’ll need a release for the people and or property that feature within the image. If you’re on the go then you might not have a  paper copy of a release to hand, so if you regularly shoot with the intention of selling your images then you might find this release app useful, justifying the small fee.

Within the app you can edit the full release to tailor it to the specific shoot you are doing, get the release signed by the model or property owner on your phone screen and send PDF and JPEG versions of the completed release to an email address or dropbox for filing.

If you aren’t sure what a model or property release is and when they might be needed check out our recent blog post on the subject.

5. FTP Manager

Available on
±Ê°ù¾±³¦±ð:ÌýÌý¹ó°ù±ð±ð

If you’re able to connect and transfer your camera’s images to your phone either by USB, card reader or wifi and you need to upload your images to meet a tight deadline then this app may be for you.

It allows you to upload images from your phone to clients via FTP (File Transfer Protocol) using your mobile phone connection rather than waiting until you get back to your desk to send the images. The app also works for uploading images to your ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏcollection but bear in mind that these submissions will still be subject to our regular QC checks.

If you need help setting up FTP to send your images to ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏcheck out our contributor help pages for further details and the necessary settings.
