There’s no doubt that we have millions of nature and wildlife images on Alamy, making it quite tricky to stand out from the sea of competitors in the stock industry. Despite this, Leny Silina Helmig has managed to make her relatively small collection stand out by making her photographs visually and thematically interesting.
Fishermen were out with their boats in the early morning mist, fog covered the whole lake and the mountains. It was a breathtaking moment!
Leny Silina Helmig
We knew we needed to find out more about how she has creatively found her way into the world of photography, how she has developed her unique minimalism style and used this to her advantage.
Here’s what Leny had to say when we spoke to her.
CG: How did your journey in photography start?
LSH: As a teenager, around 14 or 15, I used some of the money I earned from a small job to buy my first camera. I started taking pictures of my friends but soon found my passion for nature photography. Ever since then, I’ve been taking pictures everywhere I go.
CG: How do you edit your images to stand out?
LSH: I love clean, minimalistic images with no distractions, focusing on one object or subject. At the same time, whenever possible, I try to create a certain mood or atmosphere with the choice of colours. I’m often trying to create a sombre mood, but sometimes the mood can be dreamy, soft or fairytale-like.
CG: Can you tell us about your favourite image in your collection.Â
LSH: It’s hard to decide which would be my favourite. There is one that I took in the French Alps very early in the morning. Fishermen were out with their boats in the early morning mist, fog covered the whole lake and the mountains. It was a breathtaking moment! The image is minimalistic and has a sombre mood since I used a sepia tone to intensify the mist.

CG: What kind of story do you want to tell with your photography?
LSH: I try to notice the extraordinary in the ordinary – a simple cow, bird or just a tiny mushroom or flower in the meadow. By means of my pictures, I hope others will see that too…
CG: What motivates you to keep on being creative?
LSH: It’s like therapy for me being out there with my camera. I’m close to nature, back home, while editing my little treasures; I’m having those peaceful moments on my computer.
